Canterbury Village in Lake Orion is celebrating the first Detroit Tigers game of the 2020 MLB season by hosting a free opening-day viewing party. While the number of games this season has been limited to 60 instead of the usual 162 due to COVID-19, fans can still look forward to safely cheering on their team with new safety protocols in place.
“Opening day is such a huge, huge part of baseball in Detroit. It just kind of seemed like a no brainer,” says Canterbury Village CEO Keith Aldridge. “We keep people spread apart, social distance. They can watch the game and feel normal in this crazy time of the pandemic.”
The event will take place on July 24 and include a 2 p.m. tailgate before the 6:10 p.m. game against the Cincinnati Reds. The game will be displayed on a 14’ X 32’ raised LED screen at the venue’s drive-in theater by Emagine, and sound will be played through each vehicle’s radio.
The tailgate will include music by DJ Telephon9, vendors selling T-shirts and jewelry, and boutiques like The Michigan Market Place and Gotta Have Glass where locally handmade goods are available for purchase. Yates Cider Mill will be open as well as a pub serving beer, wine, and cocktails. No outside food or coolers will be allowed in the venue, but barbeque will be available at the C-Pub’s Patio. Other food at the event will be a taco truck, roasted corn, ice cream, and Tiger peanuts from Germack Co.
While attendance is free, guests must register ahead of time to be guaranteed one of the limited spots. Only 200 vehicles are allowed in the venue. Other safety precautions include contact-free check-in through windows and designated spaces for each vehicle.
Drive-ins are making a resurgence as states navigate reopening. Since shutdowns due to Covid-19, Canterbury Village has been hosting drive-in movies several days per week and other events such as graduations, company parties and concerts, including a Garth Brooks concert in June.
