The largest Detroit event since the city hosted Superbowl XL in 2006 will take place when the highly anticipated is held downtown April 25-27.
With free admission, more than 300,000 visitors are expected to view in-person the celebrated red-carpet spectacle that draws over 60 million television viewers each year when NFL Commissioner announces and introduces the top collegiate players selected by their new teams.
Last year, an estimated 312,000 fans attended the NFL Draft in Kansas City. However, organizers believe the attendance in Detroit will likely be even greater given that unlike Kansas City, rabid football fans are expected to come from Canada and six relatively close NFL cities. Cleveland, Chicago, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Indianapolis, and Pittsburgh are within a 4 陆 hour or less drive.
At a Detroit City Council meeting held on Tuesday, more specific details were revealed as to where the draft and other festivities will take place:
- A gigantic 鈥淒raft Theater鈥 stage where the players are announced and introduced will be located near the intersection of Randolph and Monroe streets near Greektown, within a massive footprint that stretches through Cadillac Square and Campus Martius Park, before turning south down Woodward Avenue through Hart Plaza at the riverfront.
- The NFL鈥檚 football-themed park, 鈥淭he NFL Draft Experience鈥 features exhibits and family-friendly interactive activities at Hart Plaza.
- Officials plan additional events and entertainment outside of the draft footprint at Greektown, The District Detroit at Columbia Street, Eastern Market, Beacon Park, Capitol Park, Grand Circus Park, Harmonie Park, and along Woodward Avenue.
- The 鈥淐orner Ballpark鈥 located at the former Tiger Stadium site in Corktown will host other related events and a watch party.
- A red-carpet event at the Fox Theatre will be held on the afternoon of April 25.
- A 鈥渉ustle dance鈥 will take place from the Draft Theater to Hart Plaza on the final day.
It was also revealed that a comprehensive security plan will be adopted and provided by numerous local, state, and federal agencies.
More details on the NFL Draft events and road closures will be provided later, according to officials.
