— and its takeout concept Little Yard — opened in Birmingham’s Rail District on Monday, March 4. The menu features what the owners call “cleaner, greener comfort food,” and includes rotisserie with “far-reaching sauces,” as well as wood-fired pizza. And don’t worry — there’s plenty of vegetarian options.
It’s the latest local eatery from , the restaurant group that grew out of the Clarkston Union, first founded in 1995. The company owns fifteen local concepts including Eminem collaboration Mom’s Spaghetti, the Union Woodshop in Clarkston, the Vinsetta Garage in Berkley, and Gran Castor in Troy.
Located at in a repurposed garage on the former site of the Birmingham Schools bus yard, Lincoln Yard offers a bar and an open kitchen with lots of neon mood lighting at night. The site is right across from tennis courts, the Birmingham Racquet Club, Lincoln Skate Park, and Birmingham Ice Arena.
“It’s lively and has the ethos of being able to have kids come over after a practice across the street and grab a pizza,” says Ann Stevenson, who co-owns Union Joints with her husband, Curt Catallo. “It feels like the most personal one to us — we’re creating a space where we’d want to hang out and eat.”
The couple has been trying to open the restaurant for years —Catallo first proposed the idea publicly in 2016, . It’s their second concept with partner Roger Penske Jr., who also co-owns Union Rec in Ann Arbor.
The oven-centric kitchen features a rotisserie, a smoker, and a wood-fired oven used to bake pizzas. A notable appetizer is the wood-fired bread, which comes with three dips — bean and roasted squash; Moutabel (like a fierier version of baba ghanouj); and garlic hummus. At the helm are Union Joints’ District Chef Zach Kuhagen and Chef de Cuisine Steve Carlton.
The menu’s centerpiece is the Main Builds option, which includes your choice of protein (rotisserie chicken, rotisserie cauliflower, smoked beef short rib, or smoked pork tenderloin) with a sauce and two sides, such as roast carrots, smashed potatoes, or mac & cheese. There’s also salads and handhelds — and of course, the classic Union Mac that can be found at many Union Joints establishments.
“I’m also stoked about the cocktail list that we have,” says Stevenson. “I like the plurality of who we’re serving.”
Lincoln Yard is open Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Little Yard is open for takeout 7 a.m. to 7p.m., daily.
