A popular international chain featuring crispy double-fried Korean chicken recently landed in metro Detroit. Founded in South Korea in 2002 before coming to the United States in 2006, Bonchon (Korean for 鈥渕y hometown鈥) opened in Farmington Hills in late December with a second local spot in the works. The chicken is hand-battered and double brushed with your choice of soy garlic or spicy sauce. Ladder 4
The latest venture from James Cadariu 鈥 attorney, cheese maker, natural wine advocate 鈥 Ladder 4 officially opened its doors in early February. The firehouse, which was built in 1910, has been lovingly and thoughtfully restored with impeccable attention to detail. It鈥檚 now home to a wine bar and shop, boasting more than 200 bottles and highlighting acid-driven natural wines. Momento Gelato
Gelateria and cafe Momento Gelato opened on Jan. 5, bringing scratch-made gelato and espresso to Corktown. Founder Tom Isaia is no stranger to business: He opened beloved Ann Arbor staple The Blind Pig in 1975 and then Plymouth-based Coffee Express Roasting Co. before moving on to gelato with Momento Gelato, which creates flavors ranging from traditional like vanilla bean and pistachio to more creative combinations like lemon custard and coffee chocolate stracciatella. Trap Vegan
Opened in late November, reportedly selling out of everything on the first day, Trap Vegan was born after the owners couldn鈥檛 find vegan versions of the foods they loved like cheeseburgers in Detroit.
