Armed with a degree in fashion merchandising and ever-present high heels that elevate her 5-foot-1-inch stature, Andi Rehm has a motto that keeps her looking stylish. 鈥淣o pain, no gain 鈥 it鈥檚 fashion baby,鈥 she says.
That philosophy is underscored by the spacious closet in her Birmingham condo. It鈥檚 a room, really, a former guest room outfitted for outfits. That includes an entire wall of high heels and platform shoes. She also shoehorned a computer desk into the closet. Given her love for clothes, it鈥檚 appropriate that she can 鈥淕oogle鈥 within full view of her impressive wardrobe.
Working at Tender in Birmingham for nine years, Rehm has learned a thing or two about fashion. 鈥淵ou have to dress to feel good,鈥 she says. 鈥淲hen you feel good about yourself, it just projects.鈥
Rehm says she鈥檚 always loved fashion. As a kid, she and her younger sister were given budgets for back-to-school shopping. 鈥淢y sister would come home with three bags and say, 鈥楲ook at all my stuff,鈥 and I would say, 鈥楳om look at my outfit.鈥欌
When her mother would point out that she got just one ensemble for the entire year, Rehm says she would reply, 鈥淏ut it鈥檚 fabulous.鈥
That girlhood passion for high-end style holds true even today. Spending money on the good stuff really pays off in the end, she says. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 believe in fast fashion.
鈥淎s much as I follow trends, I don鈥檛 look at anything as too trendy.鈥 Instead, when she selects a great piece, she says. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 worry if it鈥檚 going to be in or out next year. I will find a way to make it work with those [new] trends.鈥
Some of her favorite pieces go back nine years. 鈥淵ou can update everything you own with a new pair of shoes or a belt,鈥 she says. Rehm suggests investing in a great bag or jacket each season. 鈥淧eople see it every day, and it goes over everything.鈥
When she鈥檚 investing in good pieces, she鈥檚 drawn to designer Derek Lam for everything and Valentino specifically for shoes and handbags. Nina Ricci is 鈥渁wesome,鈥 she says, as are Zac Posen, Lanvin, and Alessandro Dell鈥 Acqua. She briefly considers that impressive roster and adds, 鈥淧aul Smith is so great鈥 because he does classic things with a little edge.
As for developing personal style, Rehm suggests knowing what works for your body. As she鈥檚 advised so many women: Even though it looks great on someone else, it doesn鈥檛 mean it will work for you.
