When it comes to health hacks, it can be hard to know what鈥檚 real and what鈥檚 not. Sipping apple cider vinegar to help digestion, slathering on coconut oil to soothe an eczema flare-up, and even applying slices of raw onion to the bottoms of your feet to cure the flu have made it to countless natural remedy listicles. So far in 2018, incorporating activated charcoal into your diet and daily grooming regimen is one of the most popular health trends, and there鈥檚 science to back up the ingredient鈥檚 benefits. Dr. Joel Kahn, who specializes in holistic health care and cardiology, offers some ways you can integrate charcoal into your daily routine.
Black and White
One of the most popular uses for activated charcoal is as an alternative toothpaste. 鈥淭here are some bacteria and toxins in the mouth that you don鈥檛 want, and there are some you do want,鈥 Kahn explains. 鈥淸It鈥檚] much better to eliminate some of [the bacteria] with activated charcoal than using something like an antibacterial mouthwash that just randomly kills everything.鈥 Activated charcoal is also thought to remove surface stains.

Dietary Supplement
Using activated charcoal as a means of removing internal toxins is a medical go-to, mainly when it comes to overdoses and alcohol poisoning. 鈥淚t鈥檚 in every hospital emergency room and every doctor who trains in hospitals knows of it,鈥 Kahn says. However, the supplement has other general wellness uses, too. Studies have shown activated charcoal can be effective in lowering cholesterol, relieving bloating and gas, alleviating morning sickness, and more. Activated charcoal is available in capsules but can also be mixed into drinks with very little impact on their flavor.听Try this simple lemonade recipe from Kahn:

1 liter water
1 teaspoon activated charcoal
2 tablespoons maple syrup

Taking medications or vitamins at the same time as activated charcoal can cause health concerns. Always consult with your doctor before adding anything new to your diet.
Clean Slate
When it comes to applying activated charcoal topically, the scientific data for its benefits just isn鈥檛 there yet. But the logic makes sense. With so many toxins in the air, some are sure to accumulate on the skin. 鈥淚f it鈥檚 being breathed in, it鈥檚 on your skin,鈥 Kahn says. Because of activated charcoal鈥檚 ability to absorb toxins inside your body, it鈥檚 easy to see why many brands have started using it in skin products.
