Good Cakes and Bakes is back and opening its doors on Oct. 17 after a nearly three-month remodel and build-out. About 500 square feet has been added to the Avenue of Fashion spot, allowing the bakery to increase its production throughout the day, and host baking classes and demonstrations.
The organic bakery, retail shop, and co-working space 鈥 located at 19363 Livernois Ave. in Detroit 鈥 serves up vegan, Southern-influenced cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and other treats. Guests can now expect more breads, soups, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and new menu items like breakfast sandwiches and salads from the remodeled Good Cakes and Bakes, which boasts more than 2,300 square feet. Baking classes and demonstrations will kick off in early November, with April Anderson, the bakery鈥檚 pastry chef, teaching a Zoom class on how to make a sweet potato pie from scratch.
The bakery has also expanded its retail section, which will continue to feature items from local favorites like Eli Tea Bar, Detroit Dough, Mrs. Pruitt鈥檚 Gourmet Cha Cha, and goods from local artisans connected with FoodLab Detroit. Additionally, Good Cakes and Bakes now ships nationwide on Goldbelly, an online marketplace for gourmet foods. And as a triple-bottom-line business, April says the new space allows the bakery to continue working on its carbon-neutral footprint and zero-waste efforts.
The visual experience at the bakery has been important since Good Cakes and Bakes was founded by April and her wife, Michelle, in 2013. Changing the space allows for their baked goods to be the star of the show, April says, and customers have a better view of the treats as they鈥檙e being made.
鈥淲hen we started the bakery, we wanted it to be something that was [about] community and whimsical, but we鈥檝e also always wanted it to be aesthetically pleasing,鈥 April says. 鈥淣ow, not only does it feel good, but it also looks so great in there. We wanted to make sure that when you walk in you can feel the love that we put into this space for the community.鈥
Good Cakes and Bakes was redesigned by Detroit-based interior design company RL Concetti. Remodeling began at the end of July and was made possible in part by grants from Wayne County, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and TechTown Detroit.
Masks are required in the bakery, social distancing will be in place, and there are two hand sanitizing stations. Contactless payment will also continue.
